113 NG: High performance even under high pressure

The pressure with which the polishing wheel is pressed against the workpiece is—alongside the type of polishing tool, the polishing compound, and the cutting speed—one of the most important factors in influencing the cycle time of polishing and thus overall productivity. Although the contact pressure can be increased with a simple adjustment, this measure has its limits: excessive pressures lead to overheating of both the wheel and the workpiece, and it is not uncommon for the performance of the polishing compound to drop off markedly beyond a certain pressure.

Figure 1 shows results from our technical trials. We examined the cutting rate of two commercially available solid polishing compounds on brass as a function of contact pressure. Even at 40 % pressure, a difference in cutting rate is apparent. As the pressure increases further, both compounds’ cutting rates decline noticeably, reaching just half of their initial value at 60 % pressure.

With Menzerna Pre-Polishing Compound 113 NG, this problem is solved. 113 NG works significantly faster on brass at high contact pressures and does not exhibit the typical performance drop-off seen with conventional compounds. At pressures up to 60 %, 113 NG’s cutting rate is roughly twice that of competing products (see Fig. 2). This allows for substantially shorter processing times and, consequently, higher polishing productivity. A novel binder with enhanced adhesion makes this possible: it not only holds the abrasive grains on the polishing wheel longer but also protects the workpiece through improved deposit formation, reducing overheating. Another benefit of this stronger binder appears when polishing tight radii, which normally increase compound and wheel consumption; with 113 NG, this is avoided thanks to the better adhesion and resulting stability of the wheel deposits.

113 NG is available in all common bar sizes and in cartridge form. For technical data sheets and samples, please contact technikum(at)menzerna.com.
